Applied Biology

The Applied Biology programme is structured to provide the necessary background and training in the biological sciences to meet local needs in the fields of agriculture and fisheries, biotechnology, conservation, environmental monitoring and pollution control, health and sanitation.
  • Biotechnology Concentration
    This concentration is structured to nurture students with the basic and up-to date knowledge and techniques of biotechnology including molecular biology, immunology, and fermentation and enzyme technology.
  • Environmental Science Concentration
    This concentration is designed to train students with understanding in biological and chemical basis of environmental problems, their control and management, as well as the restoration and remediation of degraded or derelict lands and ecosystems.

Chemistry

The overall aim of the Chemistry programme is to provide students with a strong foundation in all principal areas of chemical science and knowledge in developing career and solving real-life chemical problems, including those in the environmental area, and to meet the needs from government, education, industrial or commercial sectors. The curriculum is designed to equip students with ample knowledge in both pure and applied chemistry so that you are adequately and flexibly trained for both employment and postgraduate studies locally or overseas.
  • No Concentration
    Students admitted into this concentration will be introduced to fundamental principles of all principal branches of chemistry and other scientific disciplines. You will also gain an insight into the more specialized areas of chemistry.
  • Environmental Studies Concentration
    Students admitted into this concentration will be introduced to local environmental problems/solutions/management techniques and pertinent government regulations in addition to the basic knowledge in pure and applied chemistry. The programme aim is not simply to train students to document environmental events and problems, but to understand the chemical and biological basis for these problems and to suggest appropriate solutions.

Analytical and Testing Sciences

  • The aim of the programme is to provide students with a broad-based training in major scientific disciplines to support their study in analytical and testing science which is multi-disciplinary in nature.
  • The programme emphasizes on developing students' analytical mind and good problem-solving skills needed to solve the diversity of problems encountered in their future career.
  • The programme will equip students with the knowledge and practical skills to contribute to the growing analytical and testing industry.

Computer Science

  • Suitable for students who are interested in software design, system administration and application development for the information communication technology industries.
  • Curriculum design benchmarked with internationally recognized IEEE and ACM recommended curricula.
  • Specializations: Enterprise Systems and Business Intelligence, Digital Media and Mobile Technology, Web Technology and Data Engineering, Intelligent Informatics, Health Information Technology.
  • Specific courses tailored for pursuing postgraduate study in related fields.
  • Work experience training through optional summer internship and one-year placement programme.

Computing and Information Systems

  • Suitable for students interested in computer-based information systems development and their application in business organizations.
  • Curriculum design benchmarked with internationally recognized IEEE and ACM recommended curricula.
  • Integrative and Multidisciplinary: covering Computer Science, Information Systems and their applications in Business.
  • Specializations: Enterprise Systems and Business Intelligence, Digital Media and Mobile Technology, Web Technology and Data Engineering, Intelligent Informatics, Health Information Technology.
  • Work experience training through summer internship and one-year placement opportunities.
  • Career Prospect: information systems development, information systems administration, other information communication technology related support, analyst, sales and management jobs.

Mathematical Science

The undergraduate programmes offered by the Department of Mathematics are designed to equip students with a solid foundation in fundamental mathematics and statistics. On top of these fundamental trainings, various applied courses will be offered to educate students on various important application areas which enable their understanding of mathematical applications, train their rigorous and logical thinking, and integrate computing techniques throughout students' studies.
  • This programme emphasizes on educating students with logical thinking and rigorous mathematical analysis to face the future research and study.
  • Students may apply for the Diploma of Education programme at the end of Year 3. Graduates from such a programme will receive the BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Science degree as well as a Diploma of Education.
  • Career Prospect: Careers in which mathematics and logical thinking are required. In addition, students with the Diploma of Education can be in the teaching post.

Applied and Computational Mathematics

  • This programme pays more attention on scientific computing with applications in industrial and business applications. Many applied courses are focusing on solving real problems with the aid of various computing techniques.
  • Career Prospect: Careers in applied mathematics and logical thinking are required. Students may find jobs in fields requiring computing and/or mathematical modelling skills.

Statistics and Operations Research

  • This programme covers the basic theory and techniques in Statistics, Data Analysis, and Operations Research, various applications in commercial industry, life and medical sciences will be addressed.
  • Career Prospect: statisticians, actuaries and operations research consultants in public and private sectors.

Green Energy Science

The BSc (Hons) in Green Energy Science aims at preparing students for a multidisciplinary career in the green energy sector. It involves trainings in (i) scientific principles, (ii) technology, and (iii) social sciences that are related to energy. Specific objectives are:
  • To provide students with a solid and broad scientific foundation for the study of Energy Science including the generation, storage, and efficient use of energy.
  • To provide/equip students with conceptual, experimental, and analytic skills for clean/efficient use of energy.
  • To highlight to students the physical basis of various forms of energy technologies, especially those which are self-sustainable in nature.
  • To expose students to the social and environmental impacts of energy problem to our society.
