A. Add/Drop Year 1 Science and Technology Courses in Year 1

Q1: Do I need to take all the 7 Year 1 Science and Technology courses?
A1:

Among the 7 Year 1 Science and Technology courses, students MUST take the following 2 Year 1 Science and Technology Mandatory courses in semester 1:

  1. SCIE1006 Big Data and Smart Technology
  2. SCIE1007 Molecular Science in Daily Life

Also, students have to take 3 out of the following 5 Year 1 Science and Technology Elective courses in semester 2:

  1. BIOL1005 Introduction to Biology
  2. CHEM1005 Introduction to Chemistry
  3. COMP1005 Essence of Computing
  4. MATH1025 Understanding Mathematics and Statistics
  5. GEST1005 Introduction to Green Energy and Smart Technology

Q2: Do I need to add/drop the Year 1 Science and Technology courses by myself?
A2:

In semester 1 of Year 1, all students of Bachelor of Science (Hons) programme are pre-assigned to take SCIE1006 Big Data and Smart Technology and SCIE1007 Molecular Science in Daily Life.

In semester 2 of Year 1, all students are required to add 3 out of the following 5 Science and Technology Elective courses during the add/drop period in BUniPort by yourselves.

  1. BIOL1005 Introduction to Biology
  2. CHEM1005 Introduction to Chemistry
  3. COMP1005 Essence of Computing
  4. MATH1025 Understanding Mathematics and Statistics
  5. GEST1005 Introduction to Green Energy and Smart Technology

Q3: Can I drop SCIE1006 Big Data and Smart Technology and SCIE1007 Molecular Science in Daily Life in semester 1 and take them in semester 2?
A3:

Both courses SCIE1006 Big Data and Smart Technology and SCIE1007 Molecular Science in Daily Life are offered in semester 1 only. Students are not suggested to drop these courses in semester 1.


Q4: Can I change the section of SCIE1006 Big Data and Smart Technology and SCIE1007 Molecular Science in Daily Life?
A4:

Yes, you can change the section of both courses during course add/drop period via BUniPort by yourself if quota is available.


B. Apply for Transfer of Units for Year 1 Science and Technology Courses

Q5: Can I apply for transfer of units for Year 1 Science and Technology courses if I have studied relevant courses before?
A5:

Yes. Students with outstanding public examination results may consider to apply for transfer of units for Year 1 Science and Technology courses. Please visit https://ar.hkbu.edu.hk/student-services/useful-information/applications-and-forms-student-services for application details.


C. Progression and Graduation

Q6: Do I need to take all the 7 Year 1 Science and Technology courses before graduation?
A6:

Students MUST take 2 Year 1 Science and Technology Mandatory courses including SCIE1006 Big Data and Smart Technology and SCIE1007 Molecular Science in Daily Life, and at least 3 out of the 5 Year 1 Science and Technology Elective courses as listed below in order to fulfill the graduation requirement.

  1. BIOL1005 Introduction to Biology
  2. CHEM1005 Introduction to Chemistry
  3. COMP1005 Essence of Computing
  4. MATH1025 Understanding Mathematics and Statistics
  5. GEST1005 Introduction to Green Energy and Smart Technology

Q7: Can I study my preferred major programme if I do not take some of the Year 1 Science and Technology courses in Year 1 of study?
A7:

You are required to take certain Year 1 Science and Technology courses in Year 1 of study in order to be eligible for admission to the relevant programme. Students will be responsible for ensuring the fulfilment of the graduation requirements.


D. Others

Q8: If I am interested in conducting research in Year 1, what can I do?
A8:

You can approach Prof Yuen Pong Chi, Associate Dean of Science (Teaching and Learning), for the arrangement. The research arrangement (including project content, duration, etc.) will be subject to the mutual agreement between the supervisors and the students.


Q9: If I am required to submit a study plan to the Academic Registry, what should I do?
A9:

Please follow procedures below:

  • Step 1: Please prepare a draft study plan by filling in the study plan form and sign on it. Then, please email the draft study plan in softcopy to sci@hkbu.edu.hk.
  • Step 2: The Assistant Dean (Student Learning Experience) will review your study plan and endorse it. If a meeting for further discussion on the study plan is needed, the Faculty will contact you.
  • Step 3: After the study plan is endorsed, the Faculty will email it in softcopy to you.
  • Step 4: Please submit the endorsed study plan to the Academic Registry by yourself.
